Yes, if your call is long enough, but Gran Canaria isn't a small island you can cover quickly, unlike what many visitors imagine when comparing it to compact islands such as Mykonos. The island has a mountainous relief with narrow, winding roads, and traffic is often heavy in the morning and evening, especially around Las Palmas. Travel times are therefore longer than the distance on a map would suggest. This is why I always plan to be back at the port car park at least 2 hours before the ship's departure. If time allows, we finish with a relaxed walk on Las Canteras beach, 15 minutes on foot from the car park. The time needed depends mainly on the excursion chosen, see the next question.
It depends on the excursion and the actual length of your call. For "The Mountains of Gran Canaria" (Tour 1), our most requested excursion, a minimum of 11h30 ashore is required, pick-up and return to the port car park included. Below this minimum, I decline this tour, as the safety margin for your return on board would not be sufficient. If your call is shorter, I put together a tailor-made itinerary in the north or south of the island based on your interests, each route built specifically around the time available.
Not exactly as they are, no. The itineraries shown on my website are designed for guests staying in the south of the island, around 50 km from the cruise port. For a shore excursion, departure and return both happen in the north, at Las Palmas, so the itinerary is always adapted: the roads used change, and certain additions make sense specifically for this route. For example, for "The Mountains" excursion, I add a visit to the Maspalomas Dunes, which I don't include for guests already staying in the south, since they are already close by or already know the area. Each shore excursion is therefore an adjusted version of the programme, built specifically around a departure and return at the port.
Yes, they are different. A shore excursion departing from the port of Las Palmas involves more kilometres driven and a longer working day than an equivalent itinerary starting from the south of the island. The rate reflects this extra time and distance. Contact me with your call times and the programme you're interested in, and I'll put together a precise quote for you.
The same conditions apply as for all our excursions. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the planned departure, except for the €60 deposit, which remains non-refundable in all cases, including a change of itinerary or a cancelled call decided by the cruise line. This deposit covers the personalised preparation work carried out ahead of each excursion. If you are informed of a change, please contact us as soon as possible.
Before your arrival, we exchange photos on WhatsApp, yours and mine, so we can recognise each other easily. This is essential: several cruise ships can be in port at the same time, with thousands of passengers disembarking together. Setting up WhatsApp contact before the day itself is required, it also lets us communicate if the ship is delayed or if there's any difficulty finding each other. Important point: I wait for you after the port's security checkpoint, staffed by a state security officer. It's a secured area where every passenger is checked before leaving. I'm not authorised to enter this area, just like taxis that haven't been pre-booked. Once you've fully cleared this checkpoint, I'm right there. We then walk about 5 minutes to the port car park, where the car is waiting. For comparison, this walk stays short: depending on how many ships are in port that day, it takes 10 to 15 minutes on foot between the checkpoint and the ship itself anyway, so not being dropped right at the foot of the ship isn't really a drawback.
The return is simpler than the arrival: I drive you directly as close as possible to the port's security checkpoint, without the walk to the car park you had on arrival. From there, it's a 10 to 15 minute walk to reach your ship, depending on how many ships are in port that day.
Your choice: the tour is conducted in English or in French, whichever you prefer.
A normal level of fitness is needed, though nothing athletic. Gran Canaria is an island of historic villages, and the roads were often built after the villages themselves, not the other way round. That means uphill and downhill sections, narrow pavements, and several fully pedestrian areas where the car simply cannot go. It isn't always possible to drop you right in front of every site, so some walking is part of the experience. Unfortunately, the vehicles used for our excursions aren't equipped for wheelchair access. In that case, the excursions organised by your cruise line, with adapted buses, will be a better option.
Lunch is never included in the price of the excursion. I choose the restaurant myself, based on years of local experience: I know the places where the service is excellent and the prices stay honest, far from tourist traps. These are always typical local restaurants, for a genuine Canarian experience. Allergies, vegetarian diets or other dietary restrictions aren't a problem: restaurants in Spain are legally required to list allergens on their menu, or provide a separate allergen menu on request. You'll always find something suitable. Lunch is a proper sit-down meal, and lasts about 1h30 on average.
Yes. If you're staying at a hotel in the south of the island before your cruise, I can build a day excursion around your stay, with the same itineraries I offer my guests based in the south, then drop you off directly at the port in time for boarding. The reverse is also possible: after disembarking, I can pick you up at the port for an excursion before driving you to your hotel in the south. Since this involves an extra trip to or from the port, the rate is adjusted accordingly, rather than the standard south rate. I'm also used to planning well ahead: some luxury cruises are booked up to two years in advance, and I regularly work on tailor-made programmes planned long ahead of time.
